Robert J. "Buck" Buchanan, 95, of Woodbury, passed away at the residence of his daughters Patricia Davis on October 16, 2015 in Mickleton, NJ. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Bender) who passed away on December 6, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Davis and her husband Fred of Mickleton; son William and his wife Cathy of Ocean City; three grandchildren Robert Davis and his wife Tara of Philadelphia, Erick Davis and his wife Stephanie of Bryn Mawr, PA & Wendy Buchanan of West Deptford; and 6 great grandchildren Tori, Taylor, Heidi, Owen, Astrid & Griffin.
Bob was a resident of Woodbury for 80 years. He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1939, where he played varsity basketball, and was a manager of the football team. He served as a city councilman for several terms. He was a coach in the Woodbury Little League and the Woodbury Minor League. He was past president of the Woodbury Republican Club & Woodbury Kiwanis Club. He joined Christ Episcopal Church in Woodbury in 1946, where he served on the vestry, and was treasurer of the church Sunday school for many years.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, serving four years as a Tech Sergeant in the South Pacific. He belonged to the American Legion Post #133 of Woodbury.
He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Bender, on August 29, 1942 in Jacksonville, FL near where he was first stationed. After the war, Bob worked at Mobil Oil in Paulsboro for 34 years, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed playing golf and had a membership at Tall Pines Golf Club and Woodbury Country Club. He also enjoyed playing tennis and throwing horseshoes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Wednesday, October 21st from 9 am to 11am at the DAVIS & WAGNER FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES 171 Delaware St. Woodbury, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am at Christ Episcopal Church 62 Delaware St., Woodbury NJ. Interment with Military Honor Woodbury Memorial Park.
