John Emmeus Davis Sr., age 90, died peacefully at home in Woodbury on October 24, 2016. The cause was complications from a major stoke. He was the loving husband of Jean R. Davis (1928-2015), his wife of 46 years, and a caring stepfather to Jeans three sons. His first marriage to Betty B. Davis, his high school sweetheart, lasted 23 years, ending with her untimely death in 1968. John and Betty raised three sons, who still cherish warm memories of a raucous childhood in the company of two parents who laughed easily together. John was born December 6, 1925 in Athens, GA to Grace and Louis ('Whitey') Davis. He graduated from Athens High School in 1942. He studied engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His college education was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, training to become a B-29 flight engineer. The war ended as he was preparing to be sent to the Pacific Theater. He returned to Georgia Tech and completed his bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. Accepting a job with DuPont after graduation, he was assigned to the Repauno Works in Gibbstown, New Jersey, where he spent most of his career. He and Betty made their home first in Mickleton, then in Greenfields Village, and finally in Woodbury, where they moved in 1962. John was an active member of the Presbyterian Church at Woodbury, serving in past years as both a deacon and elder. During his spare time, he enjoyed carpentry and golf, but what he liked best was doing projects and spending time with his 'boys' and, more recently, with his grandchildren. In retirement, he and Jean traveled widely to visit friends and family across the U.S. and in Europe and Australia, but their favorite vacations continued to be summer weeks at the Jersey shore.
Survivors include brother Sam Davis and his wife Ruth Ann of Griffin GA; sons John E. Davis, Jr. and his wife Bonnie Acker of Burlington, VT; Robert (Larry) Davis and his wife Barbara of Huntington Beach, CA; and Craig Davis of Chamblee, GA; stepsons Louis A.
