Charles F. "Tony" Currier, 85, of Monroeville, completed his earthly life on Feb. 3, 2014, and is now with his Lord and beloved wife, Lois Thompson Currier. He is the son of the late Mildred Kierstead and Charles J. Currier and is survived by: daughter, Sandy (Lee) Canning, Ohio; grandsons, Chris (Ashley) Canning and Jeff Canning, Pennsylvania; brother, Ed (Darlene) Currier, California; niece, Debby (Craig) Wylie and their children and grandchildren, California; and nephew Don (Teri) Currier and their children, California.
A New Jersey native, Tony lived most of his life in Gloucester County and was very active in service to the Woodbury and Lake Gilman communities. Tony retired as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard in Woodbury after more than 20 years of service. He volunteered for a tour of duty as Assistant G3 Air with the 24 Corps Headquarters during the Vietnam War. While there, he sought out an opportunity to serve the civilian Vietnamese people by volunteering at a Buddhist orphanage in Phu Bai and had stateside friends send warm sweaters to a Vietnamese friend and her family.
With more than 60 years of church membership, Tony faithfully served his Lord at Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church in many capacities including as treasurer, trustee and as youth advisor with wife, Lois. He also coordinated summer chapel services at Lake Gilman for about 40 years.
He was active in many community service organizations, including Greater Woodbury Kiwanis, Red Cross, American Legion Post 192 Wenonah, VFW in Glassboro, 114 Infantry Regiment Retirees Association in Woodbury, AARP Volunteer Tax Preparation and provided leadership for the Lake Gilman Owners, Inc. in numerous positions during his many years as a resident there.
After working at Raynor's garage and the Thompson family grocery store in Woodbury and Westinghouse in Chester, PA, Tony retired as lab supervisor in 1988 after 36 years with Mobil Research and Development in Paulsboro.
Calling hours will be held at Davis and Wagner Funeral Home, 171 Delaware St., Woodbury 6:30-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and on Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 9-11 a.m. at Kemble United Methodist Church, 19 S. Broad St., Woodbury , prior to the memorial service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kiwanis Club of Greater Woodbury designated to the Lois T. Currier Scholarship, P. O. Box 115, Woodbury, NJ or to Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church designated to the Permanent Memorial Fund, 19 S. Broad St., Woodbury.
